Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

It all started nearly 2 years ago in October 2015. I remember it so well because it was about 4 days after our second son was born. One night our eldest Deacon woke up about 10pm screaming in pain. He has an ear infection, this was to be the first of many. In fact he ended up with 9 ear infections and 1 bout on Tonsillitis in 8 months. Antibiotics no long take the infection away, they just help him deal with the pain.

July 2016 Deacon has his Adenoids removed and Grommets put in. We hoped this would be the end of his problems and he would be fine. However a few months later we realised he was very sweaty when sleeping and he was still very tired. He is quite a pale boy however, his under eyes are always red a from not sleeping. He would snore a lot.
Then one day he woke up and came and slept in our bed, that's when we heard it. Deacon wasn't breathing right, there were longer pauses in him taking a breath and then he would jump and kick his legs about. This is when he has stopped breathing in his sleep.
Luckily we were still under the Hospital so we rang them up and he had an appointment with his ENT doctor.
Reluctant to give him surgery again if not necessary, as they said he may grow out of it. We opted to do an at home sleep study.
It came back that he has mild Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Most people think unhealthy over weight people have sleep apnoea. If that is you then you are wrong. Deacon is a very healthy weight and very active. For Deacon it is his Tonsils. They are very large tonsils that are so swollen they touch his uvula. This leaves little room for him to breath and when he sleeps it causes him not to be able to breath.

So we got our surgery date which was meant to be August 11th. However this got cancelled. This is because he had to have an ECG to make sure he is fit for an anaesthetic. This came back saying his ECG wasn't quite right and he know need to see a cardiologist. As any kind of sleep apnoea can cause strain on the heart, as it never really gets to rest because of the person stopping breathing.
This brings us to today. Our cardiology appointment is Monday 14th (tomorrow) where hopefully everything is ok and he can be put back on the surgery list.

I will update when we know more.
